Home, sweet home…

Our little emergency scramble out of town to avoid the wrath of Hurricane Irene — which, as you know, turned out to be less wrath and more fizzle, here in Virginia Beach — lasted about 75 hours.

We spent the weekend in Atlanta with my wife’s parents. Once we were certain that damage here was virtually non-existent, we packed up Sharon’s van and headed back this way around lunchtime.

On the way back up I-85, we passed convoys of power line repair trucks, headed to points north.

Here’s hoping these fine folks from the Blue Ridge Electric Co-op back home can help out our Yankee friends who suffered a greater blow from Irene than did we.

We stopped for dinner at a Subway in Mebane, N.C.

Which I found mildly surprising. I thought the Mayor of New York had ordered all the Subways to shut down Sunday.

We arrived back here in Virginia Beach late Sunday to find our house virtually untouched.

The only thing amiss, really, was that it was so damned hot in here — Sharon had turned off the air conditioner as we walked out the door. And I found most of the ice cubes in our freezer had melted during the time our neighborhood had gone without power Saturday evening.

But that was it. No damage; No nothin’. Not that I’m complaining.

Meanwhile, New York is laughing at the big fizzle there as well. While Vermont reels from massive flooding from the rain there. Go here to check out an excellent photo gallery posted by the folks at the Burlington Free Press.

Me, I’m just glad this whole thing is over. I told you Friday how hard it was to leave our house here and drive away, wondering if we’d ever see it again.

I’m glad for the fizzle. May all our hurricanes fizzle. Now and forever.
