A sideways sports front in Fargo, N.D.

Bill Wambeke, presentation editor of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, N.D., writes:

You seem to be a fan of sideways sports presentations, thought I’d show you what we did for Sunday’s paper.

In honor of North Dakota State’s win over Minnesota (again), assistant sports editor Hayden Goethe turned the sports cover into a poster and put it on its side. The headline plays off the name of the stadium: TCF Bank Stadium.

The picture is by the Forum‘s photo editor, Michael Vosburg.

Sadly, because of press setup, he didn’t get any inside color pages to display the game stories and photos. We got a handful of pregame tailgating photos in color in the A section though and a celebration shot of the team following the game led A1.

Here’s the front page. Please note very clever taunt in the lead headline.

Back to the designer of that sideways sports front, though… A 2004 graduate of Minnesota State University, Hayden Goethe interned in the school’s sports information department and served as sports editor for the Reporter, the student newspaper there.

Upon graduation, he went to work right away for the Forum as a copy editor. He was promoted to assistant sports editor in 2008.

That “fan of sideways sports presentations” thing that Bill started out with here is a reference to my appreciation for a series of pages designed recently by Jeremy Gustafson of the Des Moines Register. Read more about those here.
