One thing you do not want to see buried in a wire story:
That’s from the sports section of today’s Greenville (S.C.) News. That’s a Gannett paper
for which editing and design functions were moved a while back to a sister paper in Asheville, N.C.
UPDATE: Longtime — and former – Greenville News copy desk staffer John Stevenson tells us:
Copy editing and layout for both The Greenville News and the Asheville Citizen-Times were moved to Gannett’s regional copydesk in Louisville, KY, during the last year or so.
I could be wrong, but it’s unlikely the AP sent the story out that way. That just about had to be inserted by someone on the desk. Inadvertently, perhaps.
The guy who posted that via Twitter today later posted that copies around the college town of Clemson, S.C. have sold out.
For chrissakes, don’t tell anyone. Or we’ll be inserting profanity into every story.
We need our copy editors, people. We can’t do our jobs without them.
In this case, the Greenville News — or the Gannett facility in Asheville — needs a copy editor. And a bar of soap to wash out the #$%&@! mouth of some #$%&@! staffer.
UPDATE – 1 p.m.
While I just post ‘em like a lazy bastard, Jim Romenesko actually picks up a phone and calls the Greenville News.
UPDATE – 1:05 p.m.
Well, damn. Jim’s updating more quickly that I can keep up with him. Editor John Pittman of the Greenville News has responded. Read it here.
