Why ESPN needs a copy editor yet again

Frankly, I’d rather not hear today from the design editor of the Gazette of Charleston, W.Va. Especially since he’s a graduate of West Virginia University. And after the way his ‘Eers embarrassed my Clemson Tigers in last night’s Orange Bowl.

Yet, Kyle Slagle writes anyway, offering his gracious condolences and pointing out:

Did you know Michigan put up 70 points on Clemson last night?

Me either.

This isn’t just a typo, this is a complete brainfart. That’s the Michigan logo on the lower left side of the screen. Michigan, of course, played in Tuesday night’s Sugar Bowl, defeating Virginia Tech with a field goal in overtime.

The picture is from the Scott Van Pelt show today on ESPN. Obviously.

Meanwhile, Kurt Cunningham of the Times of Northwest Indiana sends us this screencap of ESPN’s home page last night, from the second quarter — just as things began to turn ugly for my Tigers.

Kurt writes:

I think they mean bowl, not bow.

I don’t know, man. Perhaps they did mean “Orange Bow.” Especially given the way Clemson was playing.

Or maybe it’s another typo.

And these come after the item I showed you yesterday. Which contained five ESPN errors — three onscreen and two on the web site — from over the past few weeks. For a total of seven separate errors over the past 48 days.

And those are just the ones we’ve caught.

Seriously, ESPN. Clemson needs a defensive coordinator. And you guys need a copy editor. Desperately.

UPDATE: 8:40 p.m.

Man. Three errors by ESPN regarding the Orange Bowl. Making eight errors over the past 48 days.

Give a listen…

Thanks again to Kyle Slagle for yet another tip…

  • Oops. It’s West Virginia University, not the University of… though if you ask anyone who went to Marshall University, you’d think WVU sees itself as the only university in the state!

  • I only pointed this out to highlight the error of ESPN.

    Honestly.

    I swear.

  • Quite right, Doug. I know better. My right-hand at Sporting News was a West Virginia graduate. (And like a lot of bosses’ right hands, she was a hell of a lot brighter than I was.)

I never understood Marshall University anyway. Is it named for Matt Dillon?

  • Virulent sports fans think ESPN’s out to get ‘em when this happens, too.

  • I wasn’t going to give you even MORE fodder for your ESPN hate-cannon, but … it turns out this actually was a copy editing gaffe, as he was reading from a written script.

  • Don’t forget about the fact that they spell our state “West Virgina” on their Sportsnation Polls. I’ve submitted multiple requests for them to change it but they never do. Shocking I know. Down with ESPN I say!

  • Actually, your right-hand at Sporting News was an Ohio grad, but grew up in (and is a huge fan of) West Virgina. :)

  • Hmm. Sorry I screwed up on that one, too. What sticks out in my mind was the time I threatened to go out and buy her some West Virginia items for her cubicle. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a clean, uncluttered workspace.
