Dominic Holden of the Seattle-based alt-weekly the Stranger spotted something today in the Tacoma News Tribune that gave him pause.
It’s there, in today’s lead story:
Holden questions the pairing of a breakout box about child porn with a story about gay marriage.
It’s a simple, honest mistake, Holden believes. But, he says, it’s…
…a sloppy mistake and the sort of mistake that is literally the job of editors to avoid…
“Some people interpreted it as trying to connect the two stories sexually, when it was our intent to connect them legislatively,” explains Jim Kresse, head of the Tribune‘s copy editors, who had nothing to do with the layout. The paper had simply tried to bundle legislative matters of the day: gay marriage and child porn.
The page was actually laid out under on the watch of David Montesino, the deputy managing editor for visuals, but he’s out of the office today at an editorial retreat.

Average daily circulation for the News Tribune is 78,838.
That page image is from the Newseum. Of course. Thanks to my anonymous tipster for the link.
As pure, dumb luck would have it, that’s the third item I’ve posted today about a newspaper in Washington state. Previously:
