Here’s wishing the happiest of birthdays to three wonderful folks…
John McIntyre is night content production manager of the Baltimore Sun. He may be even better known, however, as the writer of a popular — but somewhat curmudgeonly — copy-editing blog, You Don’t Say. [Hey, wait. is curmudgeonly a word? John will probably let me know.] A 1973 graduate of Michigan State University, John earned a master’s degree in English from Syracuse University in 1979 before joining the Cincinnati Enquirer as a copy editor. He moved to the Sun in 1986, supervising more than 30 members of the paper’s copy desk. After 23 years of service, John found himself laid off by the Sun in April 2009. And then — even more amazingly — he was rehired into his current position a year later. His blog recently changed locations. Find its new home here. Find his old archives here. Find John’s Twitter feed here. John turns 61 today.
Salomé Nourse is a news artist for Graphics24, the infographics department that services the Media24 group of South African newspapers and based in Johannesburg. A 2004 graduate of the Midrand Institute, Salomé worked at Johannesburg’s Beeld for nearly three years before she moved into the new Graphics24 unit in 2010.
Elizabeth Apple is a freshman at Tidewater Community College here in Virginia Beach. She’s interested in creative writing, music, drama, Japanese-style “manga” comics and any kind of romance novel that stars a vampire or werewolf. And she’s a complete nut for forensics TV shows like CSI and NCIS. She wants to be Abby Sciuto when she grows up.
My daughter turns 19 today. She’s hanging out at the mall today with a bunch of her friends and then going to see the movie Chronicle. I’m going to mope around the house and think about how old I’m getting.
Salome, John and Elizabeth share a birthday with actors Chloë Grace Moretz, Elizabeth Irene Mitchell (better known as Elizabeth Banks), Laura Elizabeth Dern, Robert John Wagner, Emma Rose Roberts, Creighton Tull Chaney (better known as Lon Chaney Jr.) and James Francis “Jimmy” Durante; musicians Roberta Flack and Jerrald King “Jerry” Goldsmith; sports greats William Lance Berkman, Leonard Kyle “Lenny” Dykstra (both baseball), Tajuan “Ty” Law, Daryl Peter “Moose” Johnston (both football), Gregory John Norman (golf) and Mark Andrew Spitz (swimming); novelist Boris Leonidovich Pasternak; politician Maurice Harold MacMillan and TV hosts Glenn Edward Lee Beck, James “Jim” Cramer and George Stephanopoulos.
In addition, today is Plimsoll Day and Umbrella Day. Seriously.
Happy birthday, all! Best wishes!
