Wednesday, the Bangor (Maine) Daily News accidentally ran a fake legal ad — one written apparently as an in-house joke.
Amanda Terkel of the Huffington Post reports the ad…
…promised that representatives from the agency would show up and “listen, with fake sympathy” to the problems of the locals. It also said that candid photos would be “sneakily taken of awkward persons.”
…We really don’t care about the bridge,” the ad continued. “We are just curious about these island folk. Anyone who happens by is invited to disrupt the meeting.

So how did this get into the paper? The Daily News’ “interim advertising director” tells the HuffPo:
- The ad was sent from the Dept. of Transportation to the paper and proofread by the newspaper staff.
- Some kind of technical issue kept the paper from placing the ad, so the paper asked for a resend.
- Apparently, that’s when someone at DOT sent the spoof version.
- The ad staff — assuming it was the same version that was proofread earlier — didn’t notice the difference.
- Hilarity ensues.
Bonus laugh: That “interim advertising director”? His name is Steve Martin.
I’m tellin’ ya, folks, you can not make this stuff up.
